State of the World – 2034
A new crisis has gripped the world as the leading Super Powers are locked in a cold war. Unlike the long lasting conflicted between the United States and the Soviet Union of the 20th century, this new cold war is not one being fought over ideologies, but energy.
The world’s greatest minds had long known that the seemly endless supplies of fossil fuels would not last forever. Many theorized that the world would run out fossil fuels by the end of the 21st century, but that was before widespread war in the Middle East, the rise and fall of China’s steamrolling economic revolution, and the deception of OPEC.
By the turn of the new millennium a continuing series of armed conflicts gripped several Middle Eastern countries such as: Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and Saudi Araba. The War on Terror, the rise of democratic revolution, and rogue factions fighting holy wars against neighboring nations raged out of control. Western powers such as the United States and Europe attempted to gain control, but decades of ceaseless fighting wore heavily on a war-wary public that was more concerned about jobs than oil. In 2017, with complete western withdraw from the region as nations such as the United States began to turn inward, war spread across the Middle East like wildfire, and in its wake was the destruction of much of the world’s oil supplies.
The crisis further exploded with China’s seemly unstoppable economic expansion during the early decades of the 21st century came to an end. China demanded more and more resources such as oil to fuel its economy but with the wars in the Middle East growing out of control, and the oil drying up quickly, unable to meet China’s demand its economy imploded on a scale unseen in world history. Widespread job loss led to increase poverty, which further strained an already weakened government. In 2021, revolution broke out across the country. To make matters worse, after five bloody years of civil war North Korea took advantage of the situation and launched a full scale invasion of China, ceasing control of the provinces of Jilin, Liaoning, and Heilongjiang, while Mongolia in 2028 allied with North Korea and made numerous pushes into the north of China. Currently, the war is at a stalemate, with North Korea consolidating its hold on its conquered territories, leaving neighboring South Korea and Japan fearful of attack also.
To add fuel to the fire, it was discovered through leaked documents in 2023 that OPEC, along with the richest oil producing nations in the Middle East had lied about oil reserves for decades. The region was not a century from running out of oil, but only a few short decades. What followed was a complete collapse of the system that had maintained the luxuries of many oil-rich nations: Kuwait, Saudi Araba, Oman and Yemen exist no more as unified countries, but regions controlled by warlords, while the once beautiful city of Dubai was reclaimed by the desert.
Western nations, their pullout of the Middle East had come at the right time as American interests had shifted to becoming energy independent, ultimately pouring money into clean energy and renewable energy such as, nuclear, solar, tidal and wind power, with Europe quickly following close behind. However, these systems were widespread with no centralized method to cover large areas with a single energy system, and while it had led to an economic boom with the need to overhaul the entire infrastructure of the U.S., many felt that cheaper and more reliable solution to solving the energy crisis was needed.
However, one old power has rising anew – the Russian Federation. With control of some of the world’s largest natural gas reserves, Russian had for decades its fingers wrapped around Eastern European nations. With the new energy crisis, Russia became as strong as it had been during the height of the Soviet Union. That power was only confirmed when in 2020, a league of Eastern European nation led by Ukraine united and stood firmly against Russian domination. An invasion soon followed as the Eastern League attempted to cease control of Russia’s natural gas pipelines. Nevertheless, despite early success Russia pushed them back, defeating the Eastern League swiftly, driving their forces back into their homelands. What followed would become known as the Long Winter, as Russia completely cut off gas and power to these nations. With no one to turn to help them, tens of millions of people died. In the wake several nations capitulated to Russia, which annexed them. Other such as the Ukraine held out, but ultimately fell to Russian invasion.
While the United Nations condemned the Russian Federation for its swift war and reclaiming several former Soviet States, neither the United States nor Europe were willing to intervene. With its renewed status in the world, and ample su
pplies of natural gas, a new movement within Russia grew – one that saw the dawn of a new Russian Empire. And the key to its birth would be Dark Matter – the golden goose as it were that many within Europe and the United States believed would save the world and bring about a new Energy Revolution.
Now, with the race on to be the first to crack the Dark Matter formula the new cold war between the West and Russia has heated up to the boiling point.
Irving Dynamics began life in a very mundane and innocent way. Created by a German-born immigrant Arnfried Irving, who was a rocket enthusiastic back home he would, at the age of 22 take his passion to the United States and created his own model plane manufacturing company in 1923 called Dynamic Aviation and Space Toys. What made Arnfried’s so popular early was he took aviation far into the future, designing and building a wide range of truly futuristic concepts never before seen. So popular were his creations that his models would be featured in dozens of film serials, including John Carter of Mars, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. While Arnfried’s company found early success as a toy maker and Hollywood prop maker, it was his papers on advance aviation that got him widespread accolades from the aviation community, which he published frequently and sent out to his closest friends both in the United States and Germany.
When the Second World War broke out in Europe, many of Arnfried’s friends were drafted into the Luftwaffe’s rocket and aviation programs, where his conceptual documents were confiscated and turned into real weapons of war. In 1942 Arnfried was approached by the U.S. War Department and asked to design and build prototypes for the Allies. Arnfried, eager both to his part for the war effort, and to see is creations made into real aircraft that might help turn the tide of the war, he agreed. Almost overnight his modest factory, which employed 38 full time staff, ballooned into one of the country’s largest aviation firms that hired over 4500 people.
Now calling his company Irving Dynamics, Arnfried, ashamed that his creations were killing countless American and Allied lives worked day and night to develop new prototypes for the American air forces. He found a lot of success designing new spy planes, long range bombers, and the first unmanned aircraft used by American forces. However, few of his designs ever left the drawing board as Arnfried’s theories were so far ahead of their time that most of his aircraft were too expensive to build, or technology hadn’t caught up to making his visions a reality. Nevertheless, following World War II, Arnfried’s company and his life were set down a new course as a new struggle with the Soviet Union would take Irving Dynamics to the stars.
During the 1950s Irving Dynamics would work with the U.S. government developing next generation jet aircraft and atomic bombers, but it was with the successful launch in 1957 of Sputnik that that forced Irving Dynamics into the next phase of its history. Now tasked with developing rocket engines, capsules and other crafts that could send an American astronaut into space, and return them safely became the new calling for Irving Dynamics – allowing Arnfried to finally realize his boyhood dream of space travel. Ultimately, Irving Dynamics would grow, its influence expanded, and Arnfried wealth and fame spread that by the time the Space Race had ending, Arnfried would shift gears once again for his massive company, exploring other avenues of science to further expand mankind’s technological limitations.
When Arnfried turned one hundred years old in the year 2000, his model airplane company had become the wealthiest and most powerful corporation in the world. While Irving Dynamics would continue to push the advancements of aviation, subsidiary companies would expand human understanding into robotics, advance medical systems, genetic engineering, wildlife conservation, space exploration, and entertainment. Yet, like in World War II and the Space Race, Arnfried saw a new challenge that could affect not just the United States, but the whole world – the energy crisis. He would again shift much of Irving Dynamics’ resources to solving this potential issue that might be the ultimate downfall of civilization if left unresolved.
In 2003 Arnfried Irving died, his company was passed onto his successor Marcus Winters, who has dedicated his life to seeing Irving once again changing the course of human history with the exploration of Dark Matter, which Irving Dynamic and much of the world believe might be the solution to ending the growing energy crisis.
Irving Dynamic Wildlife Conservation Corps
The Irving Dynamic’s Wildlife Conservation Corps was created by Arnfried Irving’s wife, Margret in 1963. While on Safari she witnessed widespread animal poaching as she walked through a valley filled with the decaying remains of hundreds of elephants, all killed for their ivory. The sight stuck with her and upon her return to the States she set out to ensure that such a thing could not happen in her country. Quickly, Margret set out to create the conservation corps that would not only save animal life abroad, but here in the United States as well. Using her husband’s wealth and influence the IDWCC was finally created in 1966, first designating animal and bird sanctuaries around Irving Dynamic facilities across the country, which were often located in rural areas. Soon the program spread to other corporations, State and local parks, successfully being responsible for taking dozens of animal off the endangered list. IDWCC, while mostly unprofitable throughout its history, has remained a fixture in Irving’s business structure, which has shown the public masses that not all huge corporations are uncaring when it comes to the environment.
Kronus Advanced Weaponry
In 1966, Kronus Advanced Weaponry was the first subsidiary company that Irving Dynamics would create. Primarily designed to fund Irving’s advanced aviation departments through the manufacturing of firearms, the company took off as the war in Vietnam drew on more and more resources back home, namely weapons the government hoped would end the war. As the decades past new wars always seemed on the horizon, Kronus would, like its parent company quickly become the leader in advanced weaponry, mostly on a large scale such as: missile systems, naval weaponry, space-based weapons, and experimental ammunition, and high concepts such as magnetic accelerators and chemical lasers. Today, Kronus is the primary manufacturing arm of U.S. armed forces and NATO allies, and as expected is the second most profitable company outside of Irving Dynamics itself.
Ancile was founded by Colonels Christopher York and Henry O’Connor in 1988, who were two former American Special Force officers. Primarily focused as a diplomatic security service working with the State Department for overseas assignments, the rising conflicts in war-torn Africa in the 1980s and 1990s soon forced Ancile to shift gears, as American influence was threated in many third world nations on the brink of collapse. Assigned to numerous corporations and American embassies around the world, Ancile was charged with safeguarding American citizens, employees and other representatives that might be affected by civil unrest in these countries. By the turn of the new millennium, growing conflicts in the Middle East and a shift in American politics allowed Ancile to turn a corner, ultimately allowing it to grow into the largest and best armed PMC in the U.S. – with a force that is not only superior to many nations in the world, but larger as well.
By the 2020s the bulk of Ancile’s work came from Irving Dynamics, as the PMC was charged with safeguarding Irving’s numerous facilities around the globe. Currently, Ancile has numerous outlets within its corporate structure, ranging from general security that handles typical issues that might arrive within a large work force, a deep intelligence network, maintaining and operating its own air force, and special operations team comprised of former Special Force operatives designed to handle the worst situations that Ancile might be called upon to confront.
Created in 2005, Kinetic Design (KD) is one of the world’s leading robotics and manufactures of artificial limbs and organs. Its breakthrough in Nano-Machines in 2016 made front page news worldwide as its medical and military applications were limitless. In 2019 Kinetic Design was purchased by Irving Dynamics for 300 billion dollars, making it the largest buyout in history, which made Kinetic Designs the most important subsidiary company that Irving owns. Since then, KD has continued to be a pioneer in advanced robots, crossing over to general public, leading to a complete overhaul of the medical industry with it’s cheap to afford prosthetics, and military contracts developing next-generation drones. In many ways, because it has directly helped so many ordinary people, Kinetic Designs has become the most wildly known corporation to the common public outside of Chrono Entertainment.
Phoebus Advanced Physics
Of all of Irving Dynamics subsidiary companies, Phoebus Advanced Physics (PAP) is perhaps the lesser known, and smallest division within Irving’s corporate structure. However, what PAP is working on can reshape human history for the next millennium and beyond.
The primary purpose for Phoebus is the study and discovery of theoretical and practical physics, which include but not limited to: dark matter research, fusion technology, discovery of black holes and the harnessing of God particles, to the creation of new elements. Currently, the most important contribution to Irving Dynamics’ ultimate plans of freeing the world’s dependence on fossil fuels is the construction of the world’s most sophisticated Hadron Collider in Irving’s Alaska facility. There, they are hoping to crack the Dark Matter formula, which will, if done, bring about a new era of energy self- sufficiency for not just the United States, but the whole world.
Chrono Magazine was first created as a passion project by Irving Dynamics’ founder Arnfried Irving. While Arnfried had been involved with numerous publications and other entertainments for decades, he wanted to find a new way to introduce his company’s various achievements to the public. First created as a monthly magazine: Chrono showcased the various activities and technological breakthroughs that Irving and its subsidiary companies were working on.
First published in 1990 the magazine quickly became a smash hit, and was among the first publications to also be heavily featured on the emerging World Wide Web. The entertainment division was soon created and would focus on other media such as children and adult software for computers and other educational licenses. A long running series of documentaries from 1992 to present, winning a total of 11 Oscars and hundreds of other awards, while in 2017 a cable network was created, further expand the Irving brand. Chrono Entertainment has also financed over two dozen motion pictures, all dealing with high-concept science fiction, aviation, medical and even a bio-pic of Arnfried Irving, which won best picture in 2030. Ultimately, the goal of all the entertainment venues is to showcase the human spirit and a positive future for mankind.
Ceres Genetics Research and Applications
While Ceres Genetics Research and Applications might appear to be a small company within the larger Irving corporate structure, its impact on the world has been felt the most. The primary focus of Ceres is the understanding and exploitation of genetics, whether it is curing diseases and cancer, gene therapy, or developing better crops that can grow in the harshest of conditions. Its research into more resistant crops has helped feed hundreds of millions of people in third world countries.
Ceres was purchased by Irving Dynamics in 2023 after decades of basement development with a number of other companies that did not see the long term profitability of Ceres’ monumental breakthroughs.
